I will focus resources on the classroom, make board deliberations more open, bridge the gap between the school board and the board of supervisors, and establish a culture of parents as our customers.  I will grow opportunities for our students, enhance teacher development and reward teacher performance, and deliver the best possible education for our children.  I offer my experience and record of accomplishment in leadership, teamwork, and results-oriented problem solving.

I served our nation for 26 years as an Air Force fighter pilot, and I am still a fighter!  I spent most of my time in the Air Force as an instructor — both in the air and in the classroom.  My students were the best in the world because their lives and our nation’s security depended on their knowledge and their skills.  My mission: produce the best possible results for you.

In addition to experience in education and training, I understand technology, financial management, contracting, personnel policy and legal issues —I deal with these in my civilian job everyday as an engineer and technology project manager.  I am not afraid to make “the experts” prove their case with data, and I know how to hold them accountable to deliver the results they promise.

My plan is simple — FOCUS ON THE CLASSROOM!  We have lost focus on classroom teaching and our schools’ mission.  I will refocus us on students learning and teachers teaching — and parents as our customers.

We often blame our school challenges on Richmond and Washington.  The reality is the Stafford School Board has not exerted the full extent of its authority to push back on top-down programs.  Our Virginia Constitution puts remarkable power in the hands of our local School Board.  I will use that power to do what is right for Stafford.

TRANSPARENCY ensures all residents can understand the decisions elected officials make on their behalf.  Nearly every month school board policies are updated or modified.  However, it is almost never clear why the board changes individual policies, which groups will benefit from the changes, or what results the board seeks to achieve.  I will remove the cloak of secrecy and replace it with openness and accountability.

As chairman of the StaffordParks and Recreation Advisory Commission, I ensured every piece of information we had was also available to the public.  I will make sure all information surrounding school board decisions is available to you unless there are legal restrictions that prevent publication.  I will make sure you do not need to go “data mining” to find the information you seek.  I believe informed public comment helps produce better policy choices.

I know how to work effectively with the board of supervisors.  Five of the seven supervisors have endorsed me in the Hartwood race.  They support me because they know I will work hard to advance policies that are best for all Stafford residents.  Because I can work with the board of supervisors, I can garner the resources necessary for our schools.  Our teachers have the lowest starting salaries in the region, but our county residential real estate tax is the fourth highest of all counties in the state.  The problem is not money — it is failure to prioritize spending.

My priority is classroom instruction.  My tools are LEADERSHIP and TEAMWORK.  I will focus resources on attracting and keeping the best teachers.  I will do it without advocating for new taxes or higher tax rates.  I will deliver RESULTS for parents by making sure every penny we spend on “education” actually helps our children and produces a brighter future for generations of children to come.

Please explain how a tea party member, former local party chair and 1st Congressional Republican district chair makes you independent.
