Ferry Farm Elementary
On April 26 the PTA sponsored a 1 Mile Fun Run after the Spring clean-up. Fifty- three students, along with parents and siblings, participated in the event. Each student received a participation medal. This was Principal Ann Lewis’ last Fun Run since she is retiring at the end of this school year.
Ferry Farm also had 95 students participate in The Great Train Race in Fredericksburg Sunday, May 4. Twelve students out of 10 age groups finished in the top ten. P.E. teacher Peggy Scott was there to cheer them on.

Bloom’s donates to Head Start
Bloom’s grocery store has been donating food items to Head Start for the entire 2007-08 school year. This donation has benefited many Head Start families and kept the school food pantry full the entire year.
Head Start is continuing to accept applications for the 2008-2009 school year. This federal program serves children from low-income families who turn 3 or 4 before September 30.
Kara Gardiner, the Nutrition Educator from the Virginia Cooperative Extension Agency, will present nutrition lessons to the Head Start students May 23 from 9 to 11 a.m.
There will be a two-hour early dismissal May 23. Students will depart at noon, and there will be no school May 26 because of the Memorial Day holiday. School will resume May 27.
The last day for Head Start students is now June 3 because of the May 12 school closing due to flooding in the area.
Students of the week were: Ray’Zhon Jackson, Quanye Parks, Jennifer Hilleary, Nazerai Lewis, Brandon Garnett, Ve’zhon Carter, Ashley Futrell, Jordan Philip-Guide, Nina Connolly-Limbach, Frederick Pajares, Julie Layman and Isaiah Rodriguez.
The following classes will graduate on May 29: Lesa Beach at 10 a.m.; Rebecca Feldman at 10:30 a.m.; and Tina Barnett at 11 a.m. Graduation ceremonies will take place in the library.

Kate Waller Barrett Elementary
Bill Wellington visited last week and presented his show “Radio Woof” during school hours. Students and their families were also able to attend a free evening concert. He performed songs from his cd collection and had groups of students participate in a few of his songs. Bill Wellington is a storyteller, folk musician and songwriter and shares folklore with students through “Radio Woof.”

Widewater Elementary
Zamaria Hutchinson is among the students who made the Widewater Talent Review for 2008.
Fifth-grade students in Amanda McCurdy’s class were awarded the “Where in the U.S. is Wes, the Wildcat” trophy this last week. Wes, the Wildcat was found in the state of New Mexico. The fifth grade also took the Library Shelf Elf trophy. It was awarded to Kristina Cutter’s class for their exemplary library behavior.
Grab the funkiest or favorite hat and join school staff, students and families at Chik-Fil-A on May 21. It’s the last spirit night at Chick-Fil-A for this school session and will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
First -graders are celebrating America on May 22. Our local Boy Scout troop will be leading the event with the flag ceremony. Students will be singing “This Land is Your Land”, “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America”. Several first-graders will discuss the history and importance of national and patriotic
symbols dressed in costumes to represent their symbol or famous person. They will honor those men and women who serve our country at home and overseas.

Rockhill Elementary
Sasha Davis and Reagan Hasselstrom are recent Artists of the Week, chosen by school art teacher Nicole Brooks. Their artwork is displayed in the front lobby of the school and they receive a certificate.
