STAFFORD—Portions of U.S. 1 at the Stafford-Prince William County line were under water Sunday night, with traffic being turned around near the Boswell’s Corner area of Stafford County.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews putting up road closure signs said the flooding there has risen to at least two feet, and has spilled over the roadway.

“I’ve been sitting here for about 40 minutes now and they won’t let me go any further, and this area is too small to turn this truck around,” said Floyd Piner, a truck driver who was attempting to deliver his load to Hilldrup Moving and Storage, less than a mile north of the flooding.

Mark Stone of the Stafford County Fire & Rescue Department, said multiple areas of the county are experiencing flooding.

“We have multiple road closures…pretty much anything that is low-lying in the county is under water right now,” said Stone.

The bulk of the heavy rain was over the northeastern section of Virginia, moving slowly into southern Maryland, according to Trina Hesser with the National Weather Service.

A flood watch remains in effect for the area until Monday afternoon, and another one – two inches of additional rainfall are expected for Stafford and Prince William counties.

Wind will also be an issue, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour expected overnight, according to Hesser.

Stafford County Road closures due to flooding include the following:

- 3400 block of U.S. 1

- Shelton Shop Road and Wintergreen Lane

- Widewater and Decatur roads

- Widewater and Arkendale roads

- Harold Road

- Sanford Drive and Riverside Parkway

- White Oak Road
