STAFFORD — Virginia Railway Express has completed the Service and Inspection Building at its Crossroads Yard associated with its Fredericksburg line.
According to VRE officials, the move is critical because now it can improve the maintenance of its fleet and become more self-sufficient.
Since beginning service in 1992, VRE has relied on Amtrak to provide fleet maintenance services.
“Once you realize the magnitude of the work being done by our mechanical staff, you quickly realize just how important this service and inspection building is,” said VRE Chairman John Jenkins. “The crew now has the resources necessary to do their job without limitations.”
These addition and improvements to the Crossroads Yard are part of a long-term strategic plan of the VRE Operations Board, which approved this project concept in 2004.
The building will be staffed both weekdays and weekends in order to maintain and repair VRE’s fleet without disrupting the morning and evening commuting schedule. A train wash has also been constructed, allowing trains to be washed once every two weeks.
