FREDERICKSBURG — Army Cpl. Patrick O’Neill of Fredericksburg was awarded a Purple Heart July 25 during a ceremony at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
O’Neill, 19, was injured by an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) which exploded while he was conducting a route clearance mission in Baghdad, Iraq.
O’Neill serves with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky.
Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Richard H. Cody awarded Purple Hearts to O’Neill and Army Spec. William Haywood, a native of Glendale, Ariz.
The Purple Heart, the world’s oldest military decoration in current use, is awarded to servicemembers who, while serving with the U.S. Armed Forces, have been wounded or killed in any action against an enemy of the U.S or as the result of an act of any hostile foreign force.
