New hours at Ferry Farm; dig to close
STAFFORD — The Kenmore Foundation has announced a change in operating hours for Historic Kenmore Plantation and Ferry Farm.
At Historic Kenmore: Beginning Aug. 1, Kenmore will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The final tour of the day will begin at 3:15 p.m. These hours will continue through the end of the year, except for Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24, 25, and 31, when the site will be closed.
At George Washington’s Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm: Beginning November 1, Ferry Farm will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. until the end of the year, except for Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24, 25, and 31, when the site will be closed.
Also at Ferry Farm, the archaeology dig will close for the season August 31. This summer will be the last opportunity to view the stone-lined cellar of the Washington’s house.
Bookmobile sets session times
STAFFORD — The Stafford Bookmobile will be in the area at the following locations and times: Aug. 19 at McKendree Manor from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At English Oaks from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. At Falls Run from 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 pm. At Geico from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. At Olde Forge from 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. At Stafford Lakes from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Sessions on sleep disorders planned
FREDERICKSBURG — The Mary Washington Hospital Sleep and Wake Disorders Center is hosting a series of AWAKE, Alert, Well And Keeping Energetic, support groups and information sessions. AWAKE is a network of self-help groups for people affected by sleep apnea.
The upcoming session will be on Aug. 19, in the Mary Washington Hospital Learning Center. The support group session will meet at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture from a board-certified sleep physician of the Sleep and Wake Disorders Center. The session will address the connection sleep apnea has with snoring, heart disease, excessive daytime sleepiness, and stroke. The MWH Sleep and Wake Disorders Center will also provide free questionnaire screenings for sleep apnea. Donate used cell phones to soldiers for charity
STAFFORD — The Liberty Tax Service office at 2612 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Suite 101 in Stafford is hosting a used cell phone collection event to help Cell Phones for Soldiers on August 30 from 11 am. until 1 pm.
Liberty’s tax professionals will be on hand to provide free tax advice and information about the company’s fall tax schools.
“Every donated used cell phone can buy a calling card up to 70 minutes for a soldier, so bring yours!” said Janet Garza, Owner of Liberty Tax Service. “Ask us about any tax issue and our tax school while you’re here.”
Liberty Tax will donate all collected phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, an organization dedicated to helping soldiers stationed in Iraq and overseas afford to call their loved ones. The organization recycles used cell phones to provide calling cards for soldiers.

Registration set for horse, conservation event
STAFFORD — The Tri-County/City Conservation District on Sept. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. will hold a Green Horse II Field Event. Do you have too many horses and not enough land? Sight and hearing van times set for screenings
STAFFORD — S.E.R.V.E. will be hosting the Lions Club Sight and Hearing van for school-age children August 28 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee for the Sight and Hearing screening completed by the Lions Club Sight and Hearing van.
No child will be screened without a signed parent permission form. Parent permission forms can be picked up at S.E.R.V.E. Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or Tuesday and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
S.E.R.V.E. is located at 15 Upton Lane across from the Stafford County Courthouse on U.S. 1.
