STAFFORD — Authorities were able to free a driver pinned in his flatbed truck after the man was involved in a collision Sunday night with another vehicle.

The accident on Interstate 95 sent the truck down an embankment, according to authorities, which said the vehicle overturned and caused the man to become pinned inside.

The collision occurred just south of Quantico Marine Corps base near mile-marker 144 at about 8:30 p.m., according to Lt. Mark Stone, of the Stafford Fire & Rescue Department.

The driver of the other vehicle was an adult male, Stone said.

An occupant from that vehicle was taken to a local hospital, and there were no life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

According to Stone, the driver of the truck was severely pinned but also had non-life-threatening injuries. There were issues with having to raise the vehicle up some to get him out, he added.

The driver was conscious and talking to a team of fire-rescue workers, Stone said, as well as medics, who were on hand in case the situation altered.

Aquia Engine 9 was first on the scene, said Stone, and fire-rescue teams from Quantico as well as Prince William and Spotsylvania counties were on hand, too. Shock-trauma medics from Baltimore were also on the scene as a precaution.

“It was a very difficult extracation for fire and rescue crews. We have to be careful to protect the occupant,” said Stone.

The driver of the truck was transported by ground to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

I-95, which closed temporarily during part of the incident, reopened to traffic.

The Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.
