NORTH STAFFORD — U.S. 1 at Aquia will reopen to limited traffic this afternoon, giving another option for commuters who have struggled with closed and flooded roads since Sunday night.

The road is expected to open to two-way traffic, with only the northbound-side lanes in operation, according to Bill Kennedy, public information officer with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Lanes on the southbound side of the roadway are expected to remain water covered during the afternoon hours, and will remain closed to motorists.

Virginia Department of Transportation officials could not say when the roadway would be reopened entirely to traffic.

U.S. 1 has been closed to motorists since 10 p.m. on Sunday night, as up to two feet of water spilled over the roadway from Aquia Creek.
