Michael Axtman, of 47 England Run Lane in Stafford County, was traveling in a four-door Pontiac Grand Am at around 9 p.m. on Monday night, according to a Stafford County Sheriff's Office deputy who spotted him. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, Axtman allegedly sped up to avoid the officer and turned onto northbound Warrenton Road (Route 17) reaching speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour, according to Bill Kennedy, Stafford County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
After running a red light, the vehicle turned onto Sanford Drive while maintaining a speed of 60 mph. The vehicle then turned onto a dirt road and collided with a fallen tree, stopping the car, causing it to become lodged into the tree.
Both Axtman and a 13-year-old girl, who was traveling in the car during the time of the pursuit, fled the vehicle and ran into a nearby wooded area. The teenager, who is reportedly related to Axtman, was apprehended and taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg because of her high level of intoxication, according to a police report. Axtman, however, got away.
"Through the investigation we have determined that the car was not registered to the driver. I don't know whether it was stolen or not. There are a lot of different scenarios that could have happened," said Kennedy.
Also wanted on several traffic violations that stem from this case, Axtman is a white male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, and was last seen wearing black pants and a black jacket.
Residents who may come in contact with Axtman are asked to call the Stafford County Sheriff's Office at (540) 658-4400.
