STAFFORD — A Stafford-based organization, led by Judie Brown, is upset about recent comments made by an HBO talk show host about the Pope.
The American Life League has launched a campaign aiming to remove comedian Bill Maher from the HBO cable network’s lineup of shows, for comments they say personally attacked and offended many Catholics across the country.
On April 11, during the live broadcast of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Maher drew correlations between the Catholic priest sexual abuse scandal, and a polygamist society that was recently raided by government agents in Texas.
“If you have a few hundred followers and they let you molest a few hundred children, they call you a ‘cult leader.’ If you have a few thousand, they call you
Pope,” said Bill Maher.
The comedian, who is admittedly against all forms of religion, went on to say that “cults get raided, religions get parades.”
Maher also called the Pope a “Nazi” during the same broadcast.
“If he had said anything about the Jews, Muslims or blacks he would have already been fired by now,” said Michael Hichborn, media advisor with ALL. “They expect Catholics just to turn the other cheek.”
Hichborn said the group’s petition drive has seen “tremendous success” in the last few days.
The group, which represents Catholics nationwide, said it is urging people to cancel their subscriptions to HBO, and to any other Time-Warner-owned and operated service.
“The First Amendment protects the people from government repercussions from free speech, but not the free market; HBO should have fired him a long time ago,” said Hichborn.
Time-Warner has not released a statement about the incident, but does note on its company Web site: “We rigorously uphold editorial independence and artistic expression, earning the trust of our readers, viewers, listeners, members and subscribers.”
Maher has since apologized about his Nazi comment, but stated on his show that he does not plan to back down from his anti-religious stance.
Hichborn said that his group is in talks to stage a protest outside of the Time-Warner offices in New York, if Maher continues to keep his late-night talk show.

I don’t agree with the American Life League’s refusal to acknowledge the importance of birth control. But I agree with their tactics of using the power of the boycott to protest. I think the American Life League is out of step with the majority of reasonable people who understand the necessity of birth control.

I don’t approve of the American Life League. I think they have a right to boycott commercial sponsors, but I don’t want to lend legitimacy to an anti birth control organization. I think they are crackpots in that regard.

I Applaud the American Life League. I personally think Bill Maher tells some pretty good jokes, and I count the cult/religion one among them. But if you are offended, and feel you must launch a crusade, then the commercial sponsors are just the ones you should go after. And while you’re at it, why not boycott the corporations that supply pornography over cable TV?

http://www.firebillmaher.com sums it up for us. Maher has been on a 15 year platform of hate, bigotry and Catholic-bashing! He’s been fored before for calling our US soldiers COWARDS! How long will Americans keep lowering the standards of general decency toward others? Maher makes a fortune off getting minions, sheep and mindless fans to quote from his hate speech, but himself won’t make a statement about this?? COWARD!
I cancelled my HBO today, and I hope you’ll do the same to send a message to TimeWarner that they better clean up their act.
To the writer of this artcile: MAHER MADE NO SUCH APOLOGY! He advertised that he would and then suckered everyone in to watch his show again, and repeated his rant!
HBO plans to expand their FAMILY channel with 20+ Disney films next year. If they spit in the face of 1 Billion worldwide Christians and 70,000,000 American Catholics, who-- with any values and moral standards-- will be left to watch these films on HBO?
24,000 signatures area already on a petition to fire Maher in one week! That should tell you something.
Christians are tired of being a target of hate speech without any effects.
FIRE BILL MAHER NOW!

Bill Maher is brilliant. That’s why he is so successful, having his own hour long program with outstanding ratings and an endless stream of sold out performances around the country.
Perhaps the reason some dislike him is that he so cleverly and brilliantly (There’s that word again!) exposes hypocrisy and evil, and those who have been suckered and hoodwinked by the evil and hypocritical ones, don’t like having it thrown in their faces. Ya think?
