On behalf of the American Cancer Society’s National Capital Region, I applaud Wegmans. Because of the strong leadership and foresight of Danny and Colleen Wegman, all their stores stopped selling tobacco products on Feb. 10.
This new policy will help curb the devastating toll that tobacco use places on our communities and help keep cigarettes out of the hands of children.
Smoking-related diseases remain the most preventable cause of death in our society today and the American Cancer Society has taken a strong stance to reduce cancer deaths by eliminating tobacco use.
We are thrilled that Wegmans is taking charge and leading the way for the supermarket industry and hope others follow. And we will continue to offer assistance to any employers or organizations that wish to establish similar policies.
Congratulations to Wegmans for putting public health before profits.
