Callander: Stafford’s political landscape shifts
It turns out that victorious Mark Warner’s decision to run for the U.S. Senate bolstered Barack Obama in Virginia and in Stafford County. Our bipartisan hero can now reflect on just how far Virginia has come since his days as the state Democratic Party chairman in the early 1990s.
Kerr: Gold still makes the heart flutter
It’s a strange stock to own. Its shares are traded on the Pacific Exchange and as a rule they don’t go for much. It’s called the Sixteen-to-One Gold Mine and its located in the desert just outside Sacramento, Calif.
Editorial
Forty-one years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law unconstitutional and ended race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States. Can you imagine if voters were later allowed to overturn Loving v. Virginia?

Reader gives thoughts on travel article
With the dismal, gloomy economic conditions that we all are going through these days, not many of us would like to travel on Thanksgiving and the holiday season due to the economy, rising and falling prices of everything and the way things are going, like the gas prices, food prices and the hotel/motel prices.

War makes strange giant creatures out of the little routine men who inhabit the Earth.”

Virginia Democrats show ‘animal’ instinct
In “Animal House” — the movie, not the legislative body — when the Deltas vow revenge on their tormentors, Bluto sputters: “I’m not gonna take this! Wormer, he’s a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer — “ Fellow frat boy Otter interrupts: “Dead!”
Hollifield: Accident points to digital revelation
I found out which is my most important finger, and it wasn’t the one I thought. It took nearly slicing it off to gain this knowledge, and, to be honest, the epiphany wasn’t worth the blood loss.

Reader: What planet is Blankenship writing from?
After reading Mr. Blankenship’s election postmortem it’s hard to figure out what planet he is writing from.
Kerr: Like it or not, Election 2009 is under way
So the election is over. The robo-calls have stopped, the roadside signs are slowly being picked up, very slowly, they’re still littering Route 610, And my mailbox, instead of being full of political mailers, is now packed with Christmas catalogs and store fliers.
Blankenship: Salutes for a special Thanksgiving
Approaching Thanksgiving and the season of good cheer, let’s all be thankful for the many things. Thanks should go to the nice company that recently sent me a free sample of some Extreme Acai Berry Melt Away Tablets.
New president, new beginning
Political preferences completely aside, Barack Obama has been elected the country’s new president. Many people across the country are ecstatic and overjoyed.

Blankenship: election postmortem --- blue
Approval of Stafford’s road bond referendum was a happy surprise for me. I had expected it to lose because of our county’s worsening economy, a reflection of what spelled disaster for the GOP efforts elsewhere this fall.
Callander: Good for the school board
Good for the Stafford County School Board. They refused to close any Stafford schools despite budget pressures. They gathered what facts they could from staff and they listened to parents of school children who attend the schools in question.

What Rover is trying to tell you
Unfortunately we humans just don’t “speak dog” very well. Therefore as a dog trainer and canine behavior consultant, I consider one of my most important jobs to be an interpreter of “doggie language.”

Article regarding pumpkin-carving a hit
The questions and answers [in last week’s edition of the Stafford County Sun] on page five of Section B seem to come in handy, not only for Halloween but for the holiday season.

Time marches on, and it’s already time again for my annual Veteran’s Day column.

Op-Ed: Transportation bond projects will fix problems
Stafford County voters will have an opportunity to approve a general obligation bond issue to address the County’s most serious road safety and congestion problems.
Vote Nov. 4 to keep Stafford moving
Stafford County voters will be asked on November 4th, if the county should issue up to $70 million in bonds to fund various transportation projects. Major roads such as U.S. 17, Route 630, and Route 610 will be widened to include sidewalks or bike lanes with the passage of the bonds.
Voters should choose supervisors’ chairman
I would like to respectfully ask Stafford voters to seriously consider allowing a question to be added to the ballot next year during regular elections. I believe that the time has come to allow the voters to choose whether they think an elected at-large Chairman of the Board of Supervisors elected countywide, would serve their interests.
Kerr: I’ll take an Obama Haircut and a McCain Ale
Political pollsters from Gallup to Harris, from Zogby to Mason-Dixon, use all sorts of sophisticated political polling techniques.

Voters should demand fiscal responsibility
For too long, Stafford County taxpayers have shouldered the cost of growth, while developers have reaped the profits. And now, on November 4th, taxpayers will again be asked to pay for the impact of development in the form of a $70 million road projects bond. Voters should say “NO” to this road projects bond.
Callander: Yes or no on the transportation bond?
To take on more debt for Stafford County or not, that is the question. Or, is the question, “Do we take action to allow our county to improve roads?”
Does Stafford have a transportation problem?
Based on several comments made recently in letters to the editor, I’m starting to wonder if maybe we do not have a transportation problem in Stafford. That certainly does not jive with the feedback I often receive from commuters continually stuck in traffic or slug riders who can not find a parking place in the morning or from the sheriff who deals with the rising number of fatal accidents.
Vote ‘No’ on $70 million road project bond
On November 4th, Stafford County citizens will vote on a $70 million dollar road projects bond. I urge you to vote “NO” on this fiscally irresponsible proposal.
