The Penn Relays track and field competition is one of the biggest track and field events in the country. It was held last weekend, on April 26 and April 27.
Mountain View High School represented Stafford County very well. Senior Olu Olamigoke, who will compete for Indiana University in the fall, barely advanced to the final round but he made his name known after finishing second with a leap of 48-21/2 on his first effort that vaulted him from eighth place to first.
The next jumper however, Albert Johnson from Corning, N. Y., leaped the winning jump of 49-3/4. It was still a great meet for Olamigoke. He wasn’t the only Mountain View track and field participant to do well.
The Wildcats’ distance medley relay team of Thomas Porter, D.J. Haskins, Chris Brown and Myles David finished fifth in their event. Remember the wild race in boys’ basketball last winter? Well, the baseball race in the Commonwealth District is getting just as crazy. Colonial Forge and Albemarle high schools have two losses each but Mountain View and North Stafford High School are just a game back with Stafford High School one game behind those two teams. The old saying “you better be ready to play” certainly applies to this season.
Albemarle once again is sitting atop the lacrosse standings. The Patriots, a team that’s ruled over the Commonwealth District for years, have a one-game edge on North Stafford and a two-game lead on Colonial Forge. The Colonial Forge boys’ and girls’ soccer teams are the frontrunners in the district. The boys hold a narrow one-game lead over Albemarle with Mountain View two games back and the girls hold a commanding three-game lead over North Stafford.
